Raw materials and basic principles


The raw materials used for blast furnace smelting are mainly composed of iron ore, fuel (coke) and flux (limestone).
Generally, smelting 1 ton of pig iron requires 1.5-2.0 tons of iron ore, 0.4-0.6 tons of coke, 0.2-0.4 tons of flux, and a total of 2-3 tons of raw materials are required. In order to ensure the continuity of blast furnace production, a sufficient quantity of raw materials is required.

During production, iron ore, coke, and flux are continuously charged from the top of the furnace (generally the top is composed of materials and hoppers, and modern blast furnaces are bell-valve tops and bell-free tops), and blow from the tuyere in the lower part of the blast furnace. Into hot air (1000~1300℃), inject fuel such as oil, coal or natural gas. The iron ore charged into the blast furnace is mainly a compound of iron and oxygen. At high temperatures, the coke neutralizes the carbon in the injected material and the carbon monoxide generated by the combustion of the carbon to extract the oxygen from the iron ore to obtain iron. This process is called reduction. Iron ore is made to produce iron through reduction reaction, and molten iron is released from the tap hole. The gangue, coke, and ash in the injection material in the iron ore combine with the flux such as limestone added into the furnace to form slag, which is discharged from the iron tap and the slag outlet respectively. The gas is taken out from the stove top and used as industrial gas after dust removal. Modern blast furnaces can also use the high pressure at the top of the furnace to generate electricity with part of the coal gas exported.
